Chicago Bears Agree to Terms with Shilo Sanders, Pending Team Doctors’ Green Light
The Chicago Bears are making a low-risk but high-profile move, agreeing to terms with safety Shilo Sanders. The deal, however, will not be finalized until team doctors complete their medical evaluation and give clearance.
Sanders, son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, has drawn attention throughout his career for both his playmaking ability and his off-field challenges. Now, the 25-year-old seeks a fresh start in Chicago’s secondary.
After going undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft, Sanders signed with Tampa Bay. He appeared in three preseason games but was waived on August 24 following an ejection against Buffalo for unnecessary roughness, cutting short his Buccaneers stint.
Despite the controversy, Sanders brings upside. In 41 college games across South Carolina, Jackson State, and Colorado, he tallied 161 tackles, 11 interceptions, and six forced fumbles, flashing strong instincts and a knack for creating turnovers.
The Bears continue to search for answers in the secondary, particularly with depth concerns at safety. Sanders’ versatility as a safety, nickel option, and special-teams contributor makes him an intriguing developmental piece for the roster.
Still, the medical hurdle looms large. Sanders has battled injuries throughout his career, including an ACL tear in 2022 and missed time again in 2024. Chicago’s doctors must confirm his durability before moving forward.
Adding to the complexity is Sanders’ personal drama, from legal disputes to financial headlines. While these issues follow him, the Bears view practice squad signings as calculated gambles with limited downside and potential long-term rewards.
For Sanders, Chicago represents a chance to reset and prove his value at the professional level. If cleared medically, he could find in the Bears a franchise willing to give him the stage to grow.
