Kansas City Chiefs in Talks to Add Shilo Sanders to Practice Squad, Pending Medical Clearance Despite Ongoing Drama
The Kansas City Chiefs are exploring one of the more intriguing practice squad options this week, entering talks to add safety Shilo Sanders. The move remains subject to medical clearance before any agreement is finalized.
Sanders, the 25-year-old son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, has been a polarizing figure since leaving college. His on-field flashes are undeniable, but lingering injuries and off-field drama have followed him into the NFL.
After going undrafted in 2025, Sanders signed with Tampa Bay and appeared in three preseason games. His stint ended abruptly after an ejection for unnecessary roughness against Buffalo, leading the Buccaneers to waive him on August 24.
Despite the rocky start, Kansas City sees developmental potential. Sanders logged 161 tackles, 11 interceptions, and six forced fumbles across 41 college games, including a standout 2023 season at Colorado when he led the team in solo tackles.
The Chiefs’ defensive backfield has undergone adjustments throughout camp, and adding Sanders would represent a low-risk move. His ability to play safety, contribute on special teams, and even provide depth at corner makes him an intriguing option.
Still, the agreement hinges on health. Sanders has a history of setbacks, including a 2022 ACL tear and recurring issues in 2024. Chiefs medical staff will determine whether his body can withstand NFL competition.
Layered over these concerns is the ongoing off-field drama. Legal disputes, financial trouble, and family scrutiny have raised questions about his stability. Kansas City, however, has never shied away from calculated risks on talent.
For Sanders, the opportunity signals another chance to carve out an NFL role. If he clears his medical evaluation, Kansas City could become the stage where he rebuilds his career, drama and all, under Andy Reid’s watch.
